Across the nation, African American people have been sent messages from an anonymous person that talk about slaves and ‘picking cotton’. This recent situation is crazy enough especially since they started to show up right after the election between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. These types of messages have been mostly sent to college students and most Eastern states of the country. The messages talk about being picked to work at a plantation to pick cotton and to be prepared to be ‘searched down’ when entering the plantation. This type of situation has shocked and angered a lot of people, especially the group of people who were targeted with these types of messages. Freshman Hazel Sommerville states, “ I think we should bring attention to this problem. We shouldn’t have to deal with this in the 21st century. It’s absurd and it’s crazy how we’re dealing with this very problem again and again.” It’s really shocking that people of color still have to deal with this type of discrimination especially after all the Black Lives Matter protests just so people of color can finally have the respect and kindness that they deserve. Somerville states, “No matter what color of our skin is we all have the same rights, privacy, respect, and safety that we all deserve.” This is such an important situation to bring awareness to because of how most people think this type of thing should be done and over with but instead it’s still continuing with the same discrimination and harassment.
