Here at Palisade, the Student Council is a crucial element because it provides a space for kids to represent our school and their creativity throughout the building. It also builds a community, not only within the class itself, but across the school. The point of the Student Council is to come up with most of the school’s events, and to make kids feel more involved and to have school spirit. Right now, the Student Council is working on finishing up their Living Above the Influence week and Prom week.
Focusing more on the Living Above the Influence week, Junior Dominic Hurd was asked about what the Living Above the Influence week was about. Hurd responded with, “ Living Above the Influence week is a week dedicated to changing perspectives and opinions on things like driving under the influence and what can happen when doing so, so this week we had different spirit days (Monday being pink out for all the Bulldogs who left the pack too early, Tuesday wear teal in support of substance abuse, Wednesday wear purple in support of addiction recovery, and Thursday wear red for drunk driving recovery.) Each day represented a different aspect of day-to-day tragedies, and we also had an assembly on Tuesday where a guest speaker came in and talked about a drunk driving tragedy that left her without her daughter. Along with that, having a DUI mock driving crash on Thursday. And including on Monday, we had Certain teachers choose random students who were presented as victims of DUI crashes, and they were told to put on black shirts, and they were not allowed to talk throughout that whole day, just to really put into perspective how random and fast people can be harmed by a DUI.” This last week, April 6th, all the way through April 10th, has truly been Palisade trying to open up people’s minds and perspectives on driving under the influence, especially with Prom and summer coming up.
