With Spring approaching, Student Council is heading into one of its busiest and most rewarding times of the year. Not only are members deep into the high pressure planning for this year’s Prom, but they are also rolling out a brand new initiative for Earth Day, as well as putting final touches on the senior magazine and superlatives. As the workload ramps up, some Student Council members say this year feels different in a good way. Senior STUCO member Ian Shiao explained, “The council has sometimes lost focus on smaller events in the past, but now we have some pretty exciting stuff planned.” STUCO is working on making every event count. One challenge Student Council has been battling this semester is the mix of Winter burnout and rising academic stress, which has made it harder for members to stay energized. But with Spring finally arriving, the mood is shifting. Students are becoming more focused within the council.
The senior Student Council members have taken the lead on organizing senior superlatives, a project that’s become a favorite responsibility, according to Shiao. “It has been really fun getting to connect with some of our classmates. It really reinforces our class culture this year.” This year, the Junior class has taken responsibility for planning prom. Senior members have been helping guide them through the process. Shiao expressed moments like this are what makes STUCO special, each class learns from the one before it, creating a tradition of passing down the torch. Shiao made sure to give a special shoutout to senior STUCO member Lyla Lancaster. “She is just somebody that has always been super dependable and always gives everyone a good laugh.”
With Prom nearing, Student Council is finally seeing the finish line after months of nonstop projects. The only major event left on their agenda is Baccalaureate, marking the final stretch of their responsibilities before the school year winds down.
