After a well-deserved win against Fruita on January 23rd, a month later, on February 20th, Palisade High School defeated Fruita High School for the second time, with a winning score of 40-46. The Palisade student section packed the gym Friday night, delivering high energy and unwavering support as the Bulldogs boys’ basketball team took the court. Both the Fruita and Palisade student sections filled the stands with loud cheers, creating an exciting atmosphere that fueled the intensity of the game. Senior Branson Springer said the environment pushed the team to rise to the moment, mentioning, “I think my biggest challenge was that it’s a tough environment to play in because of the noise,” Springer explained. “Communication was big for us, just because it’s tough to hear your teammates in a packed gym. We had to make sure we were echoing calls and staying on the same page, and that really helped us prepare for the win.” as well as highlighting the strong sense of teamwork and family within the Palisade basketball program. Even with the crowd roaring, the Bulldogs relied on trust and communication to have an execution on the court.
As Springer mentioned, leadership on the floor played a crucial role in keeping the Bulldogs composed. One player in particular, junior Carter Hayward, stood out in the second half. Springer emphasizes Hayward’s impact, saying, “I think Carter did a good job in that second half of really being a leader on the floor. I think there was a lot of time we were discombobulated a little bit, but he helped us kind of get refocused. So I thought he had a really big second half and overall just controlled the pace of the game really well.” Springer mentions how Hayward’s presence controlled the pace of the team. In a gym filled with noise and pressure, Hayward’s ability to slow the tempo against a team that had determination showed how he was able to direct his teammates, which became essential.
