Last week February 2-6th the current AP Psychologist students walked around everyday with their egg children. It may sound weird but, the class of 34 each had an egg of their own to take care of, earning points for each day. Each student had to make a photo collage of the different things that their eggs went through everyday, some students created an Instagram account to document everything. The meaning of this project was to live the reality of having a human who is developing, that needs to be around you constantly to be taken care of. The project had built community with the students being allowed to have baby sitters within the school, these people needing to be trusted adults. Each egg had their own homes and names customized by each student.
When talking to Aleeya Link, a Psychology student who carried around her egg everyday, she explained, “The reason for our experiment was to help students within the AP psychology course understand and develop and further their understanding of cognitive and developmental psychology. As well as the egg being a little twist and the fun of the experiment.” She continued, “The main unit that we were focusing on was developmental psychology and the egg was used to bring that to life, and to see the progression of individuals through adolescence all the way to the end of their life.” This demonstrated the hands-on experience of the AP Psychologist class. Cognitive psychology is the way that humans see, remember, speak, hear, and solve problems in the world around them. It is interesting to see how that can be reflected by the eggs and be taken care of by teenagers, reflecting parents.
Searching through Instagram there are many accounts that reflect the life of these eggs every day of the seven day week. Some students would take many photos, having other students pose with the eggs, it shows the community that was behind this project. Seeing the happiness ringing through the classrooms, seeing all of the houses and beds for the eggs. Some ranging from a cardboard box and to a mini shopping cart. The quiet gossip about the egg guts that were found around campus, and who had broken or chipped their eggs!
