Last Friday, February 06, our girls basketball team travelled three hours to play against Durango High School. Our Bulldogs put up a great fight against the Durango’s Demons, but in the end lost 36 – 41. During the first quarter, Bulldogs scored 7 points while Durango scored 13. Second quarter, Bulldogs scored another 10, with Durango still leading with another 12 points. Quarter three, Bulldogs were able to outscore Durango 11-7. In the last quarter, Bulldogs scored 8 and Durango 9. The game stayed fairly close the entire time but was devastating for our fellow Bulldogs who lost after their hard work.
One of the Bulldogs’ varsity players, and the player with most assists per game (3.2 average), and IB senior Sadie Bunker had mostly good things to say about the game, however. “Something that went well was the team’s overall attitude. I feel like coming into the game, we knew it was going to be kind of tough, but we came into [the game] and we were pumped to play,” Bunker stated. She also went on to say that the team had fun throughout the whole match and, ultimately, that is what matters. The Paw Post asked Bunker if Durango Highschool was a harder team to play and she stated, “I think the environment playing at Durango’s home court is different than anything we’re used to [in Junction]. The refs were different down there, so we knew that the whole environment was going to be different, and also traveling so far, you don’t have any support from Palisade parents, or any other people supporting you.” Bunker stated that usually at any game in Grand Junction, there is usually a student section for Palisade students as well, always showing up to support their fellow Bulldogs.
The game may have went better if Palisade had the home advantage and was able to have support from their classmates and families. However, what means the most is that the team had fun and was able to play a sport that they loved. Regardless of the loss, great job for the efforts Bulldogs!
