As many of us know, there has not been a huge chance for snow this winter, until the forecast showed something different. At the beginning of January, blizzard-like conditions occurred all across America. As dangerously cold weather conditions plunge into the U.S, millions will expect lots of snow, freezing rain, and sleet. The storm first hit the Northern Plains with subzero temperatures. It is next on its way to the Mississippi Valley, and soon later to reach the Northeast and the Ohio Valley. Southern states are expected to reach extremely cold temperatures.
The snowfall has been progressing for weeks now and leaving us with the cold temperatures. According to NBC News, over 50% of the use is still under snow cover. Theoretically, if the rest of America wants those southwinds to come and melt the snow, places around Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri need to melt first before that can happen.
According to CBS News, “Statewide snowpack is at 58% of average for this time of year.” Colorado is at its lowest point in the snow season in the modern SNOTEL records. The only benefit to this crazy weather is the fun activities that come along with it, like skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling. Freshman Sawyer Linclon spends every chance he gets skiing during the winter. Lincoln shares his excitement, “I love skiing, but it hasn’t been as much fun this year with the chances of low snow. But when this sudden snow powder came, it was everything I had been waiting for!” Those who ski and snowboard know that low snow and icy slopes are no fun, and definitely not worth a season pass if you’re not getting anything out of it. Our local ski mountain, Powderhorn Ski Resort, sold out of day passes last week when the huge snowfall came through. It was a great day, and that was what the people were waiting for.
