Throughout this year’s ski and snowboarding season up at Powderhorn Mountain Resort, which began on December 5th, 2025, the journey has been anything but easy. Starting the year off with limited snow and terrain, the mountain went weeks without snowfall following the improvement from December into January, leading to the opportunity to open new runs and a park. The 2025-2026 season has been predicted to be a mild one, and the Colorado community has persevered by making the most of it. The unpredictable weather patterns, icy stretches, and the competitive slopes test everyone’s endurance and patience. As a fresh cover of snow comes down powderhorn officially decided to open their west end lift, which is a short walk away from the main lift. The expanded terrain brought renewed energy to the season, offering riders a fresh challenge.
Sophomore Jacob Porras notes, “There was a little more snow, and the ground coverage is a little bit better. Hopefully, we’ll get more runs open soon.” His remark shows the appreciation he has for the current improvements while still acknowledging that conditions have been better in the past. He also hints at the excitement that would come if additional runs were to open due to better weather.
Additionally, when asked if the conditions affect the quality of the parks and runs Porras mentions, “when they’re making snow, then it gets above 40 degrees, all the work is gone. And when it rains up there, it gets super icy and just not fun. super dangerous.” As an experienced snowboarder, Porras encourages skiers and snowboarders to be cautious when on the slopes. Safety remains a top concern for everyone heading up the mountain this year.

Love the article “Winter Takes a Break; Students Don’t” by Natalee Benjamin! As a grandmother & a novice skier in my youth, I was impressed to read that our young people are taking safety seriously. Very well written! Keep writing Natalee:)
