Palisade students and the rest of the world have been impatiently awaiting December 3rd, the release of quite possibly the greatest gift of the holiday season; Spotify Wrapped.
Spotify is a digital music service to listen, share, and interact with millions of songs. Considering the unlimited access to genres and artists, Spotify users are sure to immerse themselves in a diverse range of music. To celebrate this, the platform established ‘Spotify Wrapped’, a creative summary of an individual’s listening habits and favorites over the span of a year.
There are several unique features including Listening Age, which derives inspiration from “reminiscence bump”, the tendency to connect to music outside of your generation. First, Spotify analyzes the release dates of every song an individual listened to over the year. This allows for the identification of a five year span matching one’s “reminiscence bump”. The colorful number reading 63, for example, indicates one’s musical inclinations, resonating with an upbringing in the late 1970s.
Each statistic from categories like ‘Your Top Songs’ or ‘Your Top Podcasts’ presents engagers with incredibly personal reflections on how their year went audibly. Senior Natalia Arnold states, “I like it because it gives you personal facts and estimations of the way you’re perceived.”
Humans innately crave an understanding of how they’re perceived, based on energy, physical appearance, and even musical taste. Arnold continues, “Spotify Wrapped alludes to that external perception of the person which boosts global popularity and collective appreciation.”
Social media stories on applications such as Instagram and Snapchat were flooded with reposts and screenshots of Spotify Wrapped’s. “I don’t have anything against reposting their Wrapped. I can understand why people repost it, simply to perpetuate their perception through followers,” reflects Arnold.
So, does Spotify Wrapped serve a purpose of inward reflection or a popularity beg? “Spotify Wrapped is intended for real social engagement. It is more valuable to engage in conversation about ‘Your Top Artists’ rather than reposting it,” explains Arnold. Coined as “too surface level”, Arnold believes reposting defeats the true purpose of Spotify Wrapped.
Contrasting previous years, the 2025 Spotify Wrapped was exponentially more developed, in Arnold’s opinion, “It was one of the better, more developed Spotify Wrapped’s I’ve encountered. I was surprised at how much went into it versus last year. It was very AI generated last year.”
Despite identity perpetuations and reposting on stories, Spotify Wrapped allows for a unique time capsule of listening experiences. Whether to repost or not, these musical patterns and stats undoubtedly engage listeners universally.
