When thinking about Veterans Day, you might think about what they have done for us and for the world. Although this may be true, the vets today have done so much more. Mr. Smith, a history teacher here at Palisade High School had shared what he did when he was in the army and how long he was active for. Smith shared, “I enlisted my senior year of high school, right around November 15th 2004. I enlisted in Marine Corps Reserves; I shifted boot camp for the Marine Corps Reserves, in the summer of 2005. I started in 2005 and ended in 2011. The type of enlistment I did was called delayed enlistment, because I was going to college. In 2006 I completed more training, I did that until ‘07, when I completed all my training, at which point I was activated. I got blown up by Rockefeller Grenade… I pretty much decided to take medical retirement and get out. My contract ended at 11’59a.m. on May 22, 2011.” Clearly, Smith was and still is very passionate about what he served as a veteran. When Smith was talking about when he served and what he served as, it was clear that he was very honored being in the army, for example serving for us.
Veterans day emerged from D-day. D-day is a day when allied forces were brought together and launched the largest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare. D-day happened on June 6th, 1944. D-day is really significant, if D-day did not happen, World War II would not have ended as soon as it did. It marks the beginning of the end of World War II.
