Performance Arts Student Of The Week: Kyla Guest

Banjo, drums, harmonica, piano, electric guitar, and viola, performance arts student of the week freshman Kyla Guest can do it all! Guest mainly plays the Viola in orchestra and electric guitar in jazz band. Guest is just as experienced in instruments as she is seasoned, as she’s been dedicated to playing electric guitar for four years. Guest claims, “My favorite thing about playing electric guitar is it is a great way to express myself.” In regards to being recognized Guest exclaims “I’m really proud to represent orchestra at Palisade and it’s something that I love doing and love encouraging others to do.” Orchestra however can come with its challenges, in which Guest explains, “Learning to play as a group is always difficult. Intonation and technique is really specific and it can be really tedious.” Guest remembers her very first orchestra concert, when she was 10 years old. It wasn’t the best, but after years of countless hours of practice she has improved a lot. Guest wants to take her orchestra skillset with her after she graduates, and most definitely wants to do something with it in the future.
Aside from orchestra, Guest enjoys writing her own songs and music. Her biggest inspiration is her Grandpa, as he introduced her to good music. A piece of advice she’d give to other orchestra students is “Keep playing, even if it is not your number one passion, it teaches you really important skills. And I think you meet a lot of really awesome people and you become really disciplined doing it.”
