The Olympics, one of the world’s oldest traditions, returns Friday, 6th. Countries unite and send some of their best athletes to compete in intense competition. This tradition dates all the way back to 776 BC in Ancient Greek civilization. The Olympics have slowly grown over time, from one event on a single day to many events spanning over 2 weeks.
Graham Morrison, a sophomore attending Palisade High School and an avid sports fan, is extremely excited about the Winter Olympics and looking forward to watching snowboarding. Morrison says, “I’m super excited for the Winter Olympics, it’s going to be pretty cool. I think snowboarding looks really cool.” Morrison shares what he believes makes a truly great Olympian, stating “What really makes an Olympian great is their ability to lose. Winning is great and all, but losing in a good way, it can be better than winning and is what makes them truly amazing.”
Another student from Palisade High School and former figure skater, junior, Maddox Rewold says she’s looking forward to bobsledding and figure skating. When Rewold was asked about which athlete she is excited to watch, she said, “Women’s singles figure skating, Amber Glenn, because when I was a little girl, I used to figure skate, and it inspired me seeing her have passion on the ice.” Rewold is a big fan of the location this year, saying, “I think it is a phenomenal location, I have family that lives in Italy, and it’s very exciting and a great place. It’s going to be fantastic.”
This is a time the world comes together to celebrate some of the best athletes. Rewold says, “I think this connects thousands of athletes and it really unites us as a world, because we’re all surrounded by watching these very talented people represent us, and it’s really inspirational.” Morrison says, “It’s a way for each country to get together in a specific spot and do something really really cool.” Make sure to tune into the Winter Olympics this week to witness history. Let’s go USA!
