Win or lose, it’s needless to say that the Palisade girls basketball team has been crushing this school year. With a win during overtime at Delta on January 7th, and another great win at Eagle Valley on January 9th, the new year has brought a great start for the Bulldogs. Although the girls took a close tough loss to Montrose on January 14th, they remain fifteenth in Colorado Division 5A.
This year, the team has a similar roster as last season and pre-built relationships. Kyra Birch, a Senior and fourth-year member on varsity, commented on the team’s dynamic. She stated, “Our team dynamic this year is really good, just especially since we have been playing together for a few years… I think we’re a really strong and connected team this year.” Birch was injured during a game against Eagle Valley and has been battling injury since her Sophomore year. Still, she continues to provide encouragement towards younger memebers on the team, saying, “Basketball season is long, and its hard, but it’s worth it in the end to just stick through it… just stay committed and involved.”
Underclassmen on the Bulldogs also have shown determination, with Sophomore Mady Bavor showing leadership on the varsity team. Bavor has been playing basketball since she was around five and is competing for Palisade as a second-year varsity member. She has been performing well for the Dogs, but spoke about losing determination as a group:.“Lots of people are getting hurt and sick, and it’s kind of hard to keep that faithfulness of being strong and being a team.” Bavor expressed her compassion towards the Palisade girl’s team. She states: “The team has made me… realize that there’s kinda more to basketball, like getting to know more people.”
Although spring sports are just around the corner, and winter sports are coming to a close, this is not the finish line for the team. The girl’s basketball team will be busy with games this January and February, so be sure to catch a game for this season. Go Bulldogs!
