The greatest, smartest, most powerful, and uplifting month of the year has finally arrived. Every year, March is designated as Women’s History Month by law. This month is dedicated to educate and honor women’s powerful contributions in history.
As early as the 1970s, women’s history was unknown and rarely discussed in public schools. Regardless of women’s achievements, it wasn’t until 1987 when Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as “Women’s History Month.” Other countries have also recently joined the United States in honoring women, including Canada and Australia. Notable women honored during this time include Sacagewea, Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman, and Amelia Earhart. Each year, the special month dedicated to women has a specific theme. This year’s theme is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.” This theme recognizes that we need to eliminate bias and discrimination entirely from our lives and institutions. Along with this month, International Women’s Day is on March 8 which globally recognizes women from everywhere. How are you planning to celebrate this powerful month? The most basic way to celebrate this important month is simply by just exploring the history of women’s rights and doing your research. In contrast, you can also educate yourself on women’s issues in today’s world. If you’re that festive, consider hosting an event to celebrate women or support a women’s nonprofit. “Women are so powerful. That’s why this month is important to highlight,” says Ms. Vanbenschoten, the theater teacher here at Palisade. “Think about it, without women none of us would be here today.” Remember the women who paved the way for us as we celebrate this remarkable month!
