Crazy news opened in the government recently. A large amount of controversy has appeared due to a bill being passed on the number one social media platform TikTok. A large margin was voted in the U.S Senate that if TikTok, owned by a Chinese tech firm company called ByteDance didn’t divest the app to different owners, the app will be banned from the United States. The bill was part of a legislative package that gives 95 millions dollars of support to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. The bill was sent to president Joe Biden in which he stated that he will sign the bill wednesday.

The reasoning for the bill being brought to the Senate was its concerns for being an addictive app. Not only that since the owner of Bytedance is Chinese it has raised suspicion in the American government. Security suspects that the Chinese government can tap the trove of personal data that has millions of Ameicans in it. The owner of TikTok Zhang Yiming has been trying to appeal the ban among the Senate of the United States. He has a lot of support and also showed cases among Tik Tok. An argument has been made that there are people who make Tik Tok a full time job and they have made a small buisness from it. They will be affected not only that but some people use Tik Tok for promotions which can affect the United States GDP.

We wanted to get the opinions of Palisade students on how the possibility of TikTok getting banned might change their own lives. “Dude, I’m going to be so bored without TikTok honestly i have like twelve hours a week there, ” said Sophomore Nathan Umberger. “Maybe this would be good for people who are attached to their screens. It is an addictive sight” said  Sophomore Teagan Young. The question remains: Will ByteDance sell their fifty billion dollar company? If not, how will your life be affected by TikTok getting banned?
