On March 1st President of Russia Vladimir Putin warned western nations about the possibility of nuclear war over their support of Ukraine. Although a very serious threat this is nothing new for Putin and even for Russia. In the past and especially during the cold war there were many threats against US and its western allies.
This threat was given in his annual speech to Russia where he also talked about other issues but he started it off with the threat adding that the USA and its allies have made false claims about Russian space nukes. These claims come after US intelligence found Russian plans to put nuclear warheads in space which is a cause for concern. After the USA found out, Russia later said that these would just be joint Chinese and Russian nuclear power plants in space.
The north Atlantic trade Organization or NATO, an alliance between western nations, made a statement about these threats saying that these threats were just psychological intimidation and that they don’t have anything to worry about. Russian kremlin Dmitry Pskov said that war with NATO was inevitable but he said its due to western nations fault. In plenty of other interviews Russian officials were also careful about calling the Ukraine war an operation and also would not comment about Alexi navalny’s death in there gulag prison.
While these threats are not taken as alarming for politicians or for the regular person they are very worrisome so I asked a student at Palisade High School, Zieke Collins. He said that “i don’t believe nukes are necessary and ethical” also adding that “we should still support Ukraine in other ways that are not aid” The United States has sent almost 75 billion dollars in aid to Ukraine.
Like most people, we don’t want nukes to be dropped on our heads because we value our lives, so we all hope that Western Nations and Russia can find a compromise.
