Dartmouth University Reinstates Sat Requirements

Since 2001 universities nationwide have been getting rid of sat requirements. Slowly one by one many big universities have been getting rid of sat requirements because they did not see a need for standardized testing. However, Dartmouth University, a private college in New Hampshire has recently decided to reinstate the requirement for SAT and ACT test scores.

Dartmouth was founded in 1769 and is one of eight Ivy League colleges, the university has currently 6350 students enrolled. Recently they have decided to put back sat requirements after they suspended them in 2021 due to pandemic-related issues. They argue that these are important test scores and can show how well they will do at their school.

The Fear with many college applicants is that this might play out a domino effect in which other schools will begin to start requirements for SAT scores to be submitted. There this would affect submission rates of lower-income students and racial minorities which include groups like Latinos and African Americans who on average score less than Asians and Caucasians.

Jesse Thompson is a junior and is going to be taking the SAT along with many other students in April “I think the test will be pretty challenging” and when asked whether or not universities should require SAT scores Jesse Said “The sat shouldn’t be looked at more than grades” Which is a sentiment that could be shared with by multiple students who want to apply.

While we do not know for sure if a domino effect will take place regarding the reinstatement of SAT Requirements there is a looming possibility of it occurring affecting many students nationwide and would be reverting 20 years of change.
