This week, Senior Hailey Shakelford has been chosen as Athlete of the Week for showing off her hard work in Speech and Debate. She has been a part of Speech and Debate for almost two years, and this year she is a captain.
When asked how she felt to be nominated, she said, “It feels pretty cool…I’m the only Senior on the team. Being chosen as Athlete of the Week is such a huge, fun opportunity.” Shackelford also said, “It’s really fun and has definitely improved my speaking skills.” Shackelford also mentioned her favorite memory, explaining, “State free speech and debate where they have ramps and there were like nine floors and it was fun walking up and down them.” State is a huge opportunity and has many fun activities, which make it much more special.
Some people take Speech and Debate as less than it really is, and not even a sport. Well, you’d be right except for the part that it is just considered a non-athletic sport rather than a traditional sport. However, it is still a very competitive type of sport where you are coached similarly to athletic teams. You learn many skills through Speech and Debate, such as critical thinking, public speaking, and argumentation.
Shackelford’s honor as Athlete of the Week demonstrates that Speech and Debate requires the same dedication and competitive spirit as a traditional sport. Her leadership proves that true athletes are defined by their commitment and growth, no matter the activity.
