Palisade Senior, Joey Smith, is this week’s Female Athlete of the Week brought to you by Palisade Dino Mart. An amazing student and athlete alike, Smith has earned the hearts of many coaches and others. Smith plays at the number 1 singles position for the Palisade and Central High School combined Girls Varsity Tennis team. The dedication and hard work that Smith puts toward her sport is inspiring to many.
Smith states, “I have always played tennis as a hobby and for fun with my family, but it wasn’t until my Freshman year where I actually got competitive with the sport.” Being on Varsity since her Freshman year, Smith has been growing with each year and is always displaying her talent on the court.
Smith is inspired by her family in much that she does. “Two of my older sisters played tennis, and I remember going and watching them play when I was little. When my Freshman year came around, tennis was the first sport that came to mind, and here I am today still going strong at it.” Smith continues to share the love for the game with family. “My little sister is a freshman on the varsity team this year and the joy it brings to my heart to play with her is very special to me.”
Tennis has been a very important part of her life, as she puts hours of work and dedication into her sport. “What I love the most about tennis is how it challenges me to grow, not only as an athlete but as a person. It teaches discipline, patience, and resilience. Every match is a chance to learn something new, and I’ve grown to appreciate the process just as much as the results. It’s also a way for me to express joy and glorify God through the gifts He’s given me.”
Throughout her tennis career Smith has earned many achievements as well as growing stronger each year. “I’ve been fortunate to earn several physical accomplishments throughout my tennis career, such as ribbons, medals, and tournament wins, but my greatest achievement by far has been my personal growth. Learning to stay positive, let go of my pressure, and truly enjoy the game has transformed not only how I play, but how I carry myself on and off the court. That kind of growth means more to me than any trophy.” It is truly inspiring the way that Smith uses each game, win or loss, to become a better person and player, and how she pushes herself each and every time she goes onto a court, whether it be for practice or for a vital match.
Smith has used her faith as the utmost pillar of her life and acknowledges that strength that the Lord gives her throughout her tennis career. “Ultimately, I look to Jesus Christ first and foremost in my athletic life and beyond that. He’s the reason I play, and the one who gives me strength, peace, and purpose both on and off the court. Right after that, my biggest inspiration is my family. Their constant support and encouragement has been a foundation throughout my tennis journey. I wouldn’t be where I am without their love. I can’t say that I am motivated by just one person. I am incredibly blessed to have such amazing coaches, teammates, and role models in my life.”
Congratulations, Joey Smith, on receiving Athlete of the Week! Keep up the good work and keep inspiring many.
