The media loves to blame Taylor Swift for the CO2 emissions, but as of 2024, she didn’t even make the top 30. Stepping down from the number one spot created room for Travis Scott to take the throne with 3033.3 tonnes of CO2e just this year, with an average flight journey of just 7.31 miles. While the average American was responsible for emitting 14.4 metric tons within the year 2023. The list includes celebrities like Kim Kardashion, Elon Musk, Beyoncé, and many more. Student Kenli Fitch stated, “Just thinking about how much carbon they have put out in the environment is insane, the way some of them go on flights to things they could easily just drive to is crazy and it’s horrible for the environment.” What does this mean for us? Reducing carbon emissions lessens the likelihood and severity of extreme weather events, improves air and water quality, maintains biodiversity, and supports a healthy food supply. Celebrities aren’t the only ones creating CO2 emissions, but they do play a major part, using their private jets for going out to brunch. The main cause of CO2 emissions is everyday human activity such as the burning of oil, coal, and gas. When just one person is taking multiple flights a day it’s not good for the environment at all. Even on a regular flight, the average plane creates about 25kg of CO2 per 100 km while flying. Everyone should be aware of their CO2 emissions, celebrity or not.
