It’s finally the season we’ve all been waiting for, the beginning of D51 Phoenix Women’s Wrestling season. The high schools across the Grand Valley compose the Phoenix’s, with a combination of Warriors, Wildcats, Tigers, and Bulldogs.
This sport is gaining more and more popularity. Participation from all schools really creates a conditioned and strong team. Unfortunately a few wrestlers decided to not continue with the sport. However, the turnout of new students proved the coming success of the team. “Wrestling is an amazing outlet for all emotions like anger and aggression in a healthy way,” says Palisade Sophomore Violet Gray. Preparing for a new season can spark many emotions. The Phoenix’s have high hopes for their placements in upcoming matchups. Gray exclaims, “We placed fifth last year at state. I think we can do better.”
Empowering effects of wrestling not only help to achieve success on the mat but also in life. Gray admits, “The skill that wrestling helps you build physically is really rewarding. I feel like I have gotten more coordinated and conscious of my body. It is interesting to see how wrestling impacts how people are getting more comfortable in their own body.”
With the force and energy of all four schools, the Phoenix’s are back and better than ever. “I really love the team bonding we have and the sport itself. Traveling to the tournaments is cool, especially to see different skill sets and levels,” says Gray. After working hard last year and in recent pre-season practices, the D51 Phoenix’s and coaches are dreaming big this season. Next week marks the start of the season. Keep an eye out for upcoming duals, including the first tournament in December.
