D.O.G.S are back in Freshman Academic Mentor classes. D.O.G.S, which stands for Development Of Great Students, are upperclassmen that volunteer to go into Freshman Academic Mentor and work with Freshman for whatever they are doing that week. D.O.G.S Mentors are overseen by Mrs. Chaney who is the advisor for D.O.G.S. This year’s freshmen got to meet their ‘D.O.G.S’ Mentors earlier this week. For those of you who are unfamiliar with what Academic Mentor is, it is essentially an advisory for Freshman. Although Freshman Academic Mentor is different from the Sophomores, the Freshman get together before lunch and are separated into different classes, and throughout the year compete in different challenges, team building activities, and foster friendships. Who helps the Freshman along their journey throughout the year you may ask? That’s where the D.O.G.S mentors come in. Aside from the teachers who are in the classroom, D.O.G.S mentors come in to help build the confidence and school skills needed in the Freshman so they can have a support system as they start their new journey in Palisade as a Bulldog. Freshman Mav Savoni loved meeting his D.O.G.S mentor, saying they were “Nice!”, showing D.O.G.S mentors have a positive influence on the new Freshman. Not only are D.O.G.S being a positive influence on the Freshman, but they are someone to relate to because they were once a Freshman too.
Freshman Ryder Myers demonstrates his interest in them saying “They seem nice and Interesting” following up after being asked what’s interesting about his mentors Myers states “The sports they do and their grade and how they had mentors before” This demonstrates one of the many things Palisade High School does to get its new students acclimated to the school’s culture and set them up for success.
