Many teenagers want to be with the latest trends, but what if the overconsumption of Gen Z products has gone too far? The Labubu, sold by POPMART, is a furry, rabbit-looking like doll with fanged, sharp teeth. Although they aren’t new, this little doll has been ripped off the shelves and blowing up on social media, such as Tiktok, receiving both positive reviews and negative backlash. One woman has been made fun of for owning a 24 Karat Gold Labubu. People have been mocking owners of Labubus, trashing the scary look of the doll and rebuking the popular trend.
Some Labubus are being sold as high as almost two-hundred dollars. They can be bought in plush form, keychains, and many more accessories. The price and style of the doll is up for debate as to why people choose to buy them. Are the Labubus going to be the next Stanley cup? Will we find them, along with every other victim of modern overconsumption, in thrift stores and garbage piles?
This isn’t the first example of an item that’s blown up on social media for being extremely popular. We have seen the downfall of other products, like Hydro Flasks and E.L.F products, because of the decline of usage on social media. Once the new, cool, product comes into stock, everyone forgets about the old trends. The greed and need for more seen in Gen Z could be the reason behind the explosion of Labubus.
Junior Lucie Matthews was asked how she felt concerning this trendy product. Her response was funny, yet honest. “I don’t enjoy Labubus whatsoever. I think they’re weird looking and ugly…they need to be stripped from the shelves,” comments Matthews. When asked why she thought people would want to buy this product, she stated,“They want to be cool, they want to be with the trends. And that’s just not it.”
Everyone has their own preferences, and that’s what makes humans unique. Whether you have a Labubu or not, that’s okay, but it becomes a problem when everyone conforms to the likings of social media.
