Oxford University has officially chosen “Brain Rot” as its word of the year. “Brain Rot” can be described as losing intelligence from consuming low quality or mindless content. The definition that the Oxford dictionary has given Brain Rot is: “Supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as a result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging. Also: something characterized as likely to lead to such deterioration.” “Brain Rot” has gained a lot of popularity over the past couple of years due to multiple different reasons. Some of these reasons can include laziness, lack of motivation, and it’s an easy way to make someone laugh. The laziness part comes from how easy it is to make “Brain Rot” content. “Brain Rot” has plagued social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Youtube, and X. Most “Brain Rot” videos are very low quality to hopefully get laughs. “Brain Rot” currently is the easiest type of content to make and post online. It is also a cheat code to get views, likes, comments, and gain followers and subscribers to make more money. Huxley Peak, who is a freshman at Palisade High School stated: “ I feel pretty sigma that “Brain Rot” is the Oxford dictionary word of the year because I really love “Brain Rot” and it makes me laugh a lot.” While some of the content can be funny, a lot of it is intelligent. “Brain Rot” has seemingly taken over a lot of people’s actions and words. Words like, “Skibidi”, “Rizzler”, “Fanum Tax”, “Ohio”, and “Sigma” have taken over the younger generations vocabulary.
