March and April Showers Affect Golf Season
The Palisade girl’s golf team has had a rough start and middle of the season. It has been hard on them not because of their playing ability but simply because of the weather. They have had three tournaments canceled because of the weather and have had multiple postponed starts. All of the cancellations and late starts have been caused by snow and weather. The five seniors recently traveled to Denver to make up a tournament that had been canceled last Tuesday, April 25. They traveled over Monday and were able to play an 18-hole practice round. Tuesday morning the weather was perfect for about 12 holes. The temperatures were quickly dropping with storm clouds rolling in. There were around one hundred and eleven girls in the tournament. With one hole left in the tournament, all the girls were forced to evacuate the course due to lightning for a thirty-minute delay. Once all of the girls were inside the coach running the tournament decided to just cancel the rest of the tournament because the weather was just going to get worse. As far as scoring the coaches decided to just give the girls a par on their last hole. Palisade had three girls place in the top forty-five and they came in thirteenth place as a team out of twenty-seven teams.
While the five senior girls were in Denver thirteen of the younger girls traveled to Rifle on Tuesday to compete in a varsity tournament. They had five girls that played stroke play and two scramble teams. Even though it was snowing and raining for the majority of the tournament they persevered and played through it. The top finisher for Palisade, Cecelia Dunn-dietrich, came in fourteenth with a score of 114.
Many of the girls loved traveling and being able to play around new girls. Freshman, Mallory Brownell, commented on her opportunity to travel to Rifle Creek Golf Course. Brownell expressed, “other than the weather being really bad and cold the Rifle course is really pretty and being able to travel with the team is a good team bonding experience.” Brownell was a part of one of the scramble teams.
Hopefully, the weather clears up for the rest of their season!
