The Oscars 2023
The 95th Academy Awards occurred multiple weeks ago on the 12th, and multiple films swept the floor. The genre-defying film Everything Everywhere All At Once took home the Oscar for best picture, best director, original screenplay, film editing, best actress (Michelle Yeoh), best supporting actor (Ke Huy Quan), and best supporting actress (Jamie Lee Curtis). The film already had the most nominations, so it definitely deserved the solid wins. This was a huge accomplishment for the movie that is distributed by the independent film company A24. Perhaps because of all these wins that will be in the history books more independent film companies could have bigger opportunities. Along with this sci-fi film, the notorious war drama All Quiet On the Western Front also took home many wins including best international film, original score, cinematography, and production design. But the best part of the evening was Jimmy Kimmel. The three hour award show definitely didn’t leave fans disappointed with the comedian hosting the show for his third time. Overall, the night was a success with various performances from Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Lenny Kravitz and many more. But the most controversial topic of the night is the least of what you would expect. The day after the award show, fans weren’t afraid to take to social media to share their opinion on some of the winners, specifically Jamie Lee Curtise’s win for best supporting actress. Many fans and movie-watchers believed Angela Bassett deserved the award for her performance in the second Black Panther, while others think Jamie is the queen of horror and has deserved this award after a long-time career of acting. The rest of the wins include Brendan Fraser for as best actor in The Whale, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio for best animated feature, Women Talking as best adapted screenplay, Avatar: The Way of Water for visual effects, “Naatu Naatu” from RRR for best original song, Navalny for documentary feature, The Elephant Whisperers for documentary short subject, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever for costume design, The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse for animated short, An Irish Goodbye for live action short, Top Gun: Maverick for sound, and The Whale for makeup and hairstyling.
