A large bike race just happened in Grand Junction, with long routes and a scenic view called, the “Tour of The Moon Bike race.” This race has been a thing since the 1980’s and has continued since. Within this event, bikers had multiple options for the routes they wanted to take, such as a 41 mile course, and a 64 mile course. Not only were there more than 1,000 participants, every racer signed up supporting the cause of safer cycling and more aware drivers. This week Ms. Stout was asked why she volunteers at these bike races, and why she mentors the kids involved with the National Honors Society. Ms. Stout said, “The NHS volunteers helped work eight different stations all doing different things, some stations were helping bikers and racers go around tight corners, while some stations were letting bicyclists know what was ahead.” After volunteering at this event, NHS members experienced helping with the race and feeling the hype that was talked about throughout the valley. Stout had also mentioned that they have done it every year, because of the great company that sponsors this race. “We work really well with this company and enjoy helping out people in the community, as it’s a way for the NHS to be in the community. We look at NHS hours as being within the school, within palisade, the community of grand junction, and then colorado, then the world. Being able to do these two races, one in Palisade, and then one out in the Fruita area, we feel like we’re really covering all of those bases.” With outstanding scenery near us, it is clear that there will be bike races that everyone can look forward to and enjoy participating in.
