There’s nothing quite like the sounds of rivaling fans reverberating through your ears, the bright stadium lights striking down on your face, and not-so-patiently waiting on the edge of your seat to see the game every fan waits for: The Battle of the Cats.
On Tuesday, April 8th, the Fruita Monument Wildcats invited the Grand Junction Tigers to try their luck in a rival match at Colorado Mesa University’s Unity Field. Big mistake. The Tigers took an early lead in the first quarter, ending with a 4-1 score. The Wildcats tried their best to keep up with our athletes, but not enough to classify the game as a “nailbiter.” By the end of the fourth quarter, it was over for the Wildcats, with a highly expected win for the Tigers. The game ended 14-11, placing another victory in the hands of Grand Junction Boys Lacrosse.
When asked to reflect on the game, Senior Joseph Zambrano adds emphasis to the importance of the team’s motivations. “What I feel people should know about us is that we are hungry for a State Championship. And we love our chances at winning against any team we face.”
Zambrano, a Varsity Defensive Midfielder, has been playing as a Tiger throughout his high school career. “Our only need for improvement right now is focus. We need to narrow in our intentions and silence that outside noise that affects us.”
The team has seen lots of successes not only this game but throughout their season thus far. They are currently sitting at fourth place for the 4A Region and continue to raise their ranks with every game.
Great job so far this season Tigers, we can’t wait to see you take down the Aspen Skiers this upcoming Thursday, April 24th.
