The Palisade girls varsity soccer team suffered a loss against Fruita Monument High School on March 25th at Colorado Mesa University (CMU). Despite the 0-3 score, the Bulldogs persisted and demonstrated good sportsmanship and teamwork as usual.
The Fruita Wildcats and the Palisade Bulldogs came into the match, equipped with previous wins and talent, individually and collectively. On March 6th, Palisade won by three and last Tuesday they won by a close margin as well. However, a win was debatable against Fruita considering their clean sheet against Roaring Fork and recent victory over the Rams.
Junior Kate Fricke is a forward and one of three team captains. “We connected six passes and swung it across the backline. Then, we got it back to center mids. That was a good moment because we possessed,” explains Fricke. The team embodied motivation as head Coach Raul De Villegas Decker encouraged them throughout the match. Going into the second half, Palisade had opportunities to time plays, making them work smarter.
With the minutes ticking down, Palisade became more desperate to score, allowing Fruita to take advantage of the ball. Fricke reflects, “It opened our eyes to how much we need to progress this season. We need to find our own style of playing and push ourselves to achieve that.” Fricke adds, “Yesterday was not what we wanted it to be.”
Junior Claire Powell plays outside back and voices the collective disappointment the team felt after the blow. “We were hoping to have a more balanced play,” says Powell.
So far this season, Palisade has played two and a half games while Fruita has played four. The Wildcats are ferocious and a tight pack considering the majority of the players play for Fire FC, a club team known for their determination and impressive skill. Powell notes, “Our defense is weaker because we are all getting used to each other.” Palisade’s gears are shaking off the rust. Starting a new season can be difficult, especially after losing last year’s seniors who were essential to Palisade’s success.
After the game, the team huddled up to reflect on the match and how they can improve. Palisade soccer encapsulates a range of talents, showcasing unique strengths from all grades. The Bulldogs are ready to work harder and revive their winning streak. Come to CMU to watch the varsity team battle Central on April 4th at 7:30.
