New school year brings new policies and the cell phone policy is a big change.
This year at all District 51 schools, they implemented a new policy for electronic use. The use of headphones, cell phones, and apple watches has been banned due to it being a massive distraction. Assistant principal at Palisade High School, Zeb Hayward stated, “I believe that the new cell phone policy is better for the student education throughout the school and the district.” At Palisade High School, we have always had a cell phone policy but it wasn’t enforced very often. Cell phones were only ever allowed for educational purposes but they always caused some sort of distraction. The Student body feels a lot more social without cell phones. While the new policy put in place seemed harsh and fought against a lot of backlash, students came to realize that it was not very hard to stay off of phones during class. Every teacher has had a policy in place in the past. All the teachers had different policies, certain classes like P.E. and Comp never allowed any cell phone use. Other classes were a lot more lenient and as long as the phone wasn’t distracting from learning, then students could use their phones. Teachers and staff can relax more now without having to get on kids for always being on their phones and not paying attention in class.
