Getting back into the groove of school sports can be tricky after a summer of relaxation, however Palisade’s cross country team has returned stronger than ever. These Bulldogs have showcased excellence and ambition, and this year will be intensified.
This year’s team is equipped with many new talents, ranging from every grade. Among these new faces is Junior Ian Shiao. “I joined cross country because I thought it would be good to do another sport during my off season until swim,” states Shiao. Considering Shiao’s past in track, he admits, “I feel like I am in a very comfortable position on the team. Practices are definitely hard but I’ve been able to push through.”
Cross country is a sport that strives through competition and support. Shiao adds, “I’m most excited for the team dynamic. Everyone is so nice and very supportive of one another. It’s a lot different than swimming. I am very happy I have this space.”
Coaches Petrotski and Knox will lead these runners to future greatness, never faltering in showcasing their passion and encouragement. It’s safe to say each athlete appreciates their dedication to their team.
Junior Hank DeFord is one of Palisade’s best runners. He is eager “to get back to racing, especially against friends from other schools, because it’s been awhile.” This is his first year on varsity and has goals to “win a race and get sub 16 minutes in the 5K.”
DeFord concludes, “We’ve been working hard and have improved a lot since last year. I think it’ll be a good season for Palisade.”
Go cheer on the XC team for their first meet on August 24th at Las Colonias at 8:30 a.m.
