On November 29th, Spotify’s annual compilation of sentimentalism and passion opened up to all Spotify users. This release was composed of one’s listening habits, dominant artists, and even moods based on the total vibe of your Spotify profile. Detailed visuals, colorful designs and unique characterizations make Spotify Wrapped made for a pop culture explosion. Sophomore Natalia Arnold expressed her love for Spotify Wrapped. “The visuals were so cool! It kept me very entertained. Last year, it was boring. But it was a lot more creative this year.”
According to your most listened to artists, Spotify pinpointed a location where they are most prominent. Each section of Spotify Wrapped has the purpose of showcasing one’s personality. A new addition to this is Spotify’s development of Me in 2023. Each listener is awarded a card that sums up a streaming habit that defined the year. There are 12 characters like ‘vampire’, a person who prefers dim music at night and a ‘shapeshifter’, someone who switches genres often. Arnold’s character was a time traveler, who repeats the same tracks. “Getting to see how many minutes and Top 5 artists was the best part. I had 120,000 minutes and my top artist was Lana Del Rey,” concludes Arnold.
Apple Music released a similar collection of stats, coined as Apple Music Replay. In most student’s opinions, it worsley reflects the format of Spotify Wrapped. “Spotify is so much better. The organization and structure of Apple Music is confusing.” Comparing the exciting graphics of the two, Spotify Wrapped can undoubtedly pass Replay. It isn’t ideal to share Replay’s unaesthetic charts online. Sophomore Ian Shiao primarily uses Apple Music. Even Shiao admits, “I prefer Spotify Wrapped because it has cooler visuals and I feel as though a lot of people share their music through it. I sort of felt left out.”
Every year, Spotify Wrapped serves as an outlet for music lovers to express their passions and dive deeper into their habits.
